Sanatorium entered the contemporary art scene in 2009 as an art initiative founded by eight artists. Following its debut exhibition in January of the same year, it first served as an exhibit venue for artistic productions by the artists within the body of the initiative for a certain period. Over time, it organized solo or group/curatorial exhibitions with local and foreign artists outside the initiative.
In September 2011 Sanatorium decided to establish its identity as an art gallery. Sanatorium aims at establishing its presence both in the local and international contemporary art scene through its portfolio of artists including local and foreign, young and emerging, as well as established and internationally renowned ones.
Enriching the art scene in Turkey with its perspective and vision provided by the fact of being founded by artists, Sanatorium acts with a mentality searching for the ways of increasing its contribution through different collaborations regarding contemporary art. In addition to the contribution of each project to the art world in the local or international context, Sanatorium evaluates the art production not only in terms of the result but also the production process and acts in the way that it takes into consideration what it brings in to its own development process as well as the artists within its body.
